Bluetongue virus (BTV) is the pathogen responsible for bluetongue disease. This disease, transmitted mainly by Culicoides midges and infecting cattle, sheep, goats and other ruminants, often presents with oral mucosal erosion, tongue cyanosis, coronitis and reproductive disorders. It is a highly contagious OIE-notifiable animal disease and a critical barrier to global livestock trade, inflicting massive economic losses on the breeding industry through abortion, reduced production performance and mandatory quarantine restrictions.
In bluetongue disease (BT) diagnostics, the VP7 protein is the major, highly conserved core structural protein of the virus. Because its sequence is relatively stable across all serotypes, it serves as the primary target for group-specific sero-diagnostics (detecting exposure to any bluetongue virus strain) rather than identifying a specific serotype.
