Background knowledge of pig pregnancy testing

The estrous cycle in the pig averages 21 days but can range from 17 to 25 days. The first day of standing heat, when the female is receptive to the male and will stand to be mounted, is referred to as day 0. The two or three days that the female is sexually receptive is termed estrus. During the estrous cycle, artificial insemination (AI) can be performed.

There are several ways to detect pregnancy in sows. One of the most common methods used for pregnancy diagnosis is observation of physiological and behavioral signs of estrus after breeding1. If a sow or gilt becomes pregnant after breeding, the production of a hormone called progesterone is maintained until farrowing1. In non-pregnant animals, estrone sulfate production is low. Both urinary and serum concentrations of estrone sulfate have been used for pregnancy diagnosis in swine. Normally, there is a 10 to 100-fold increase of estrone sulfate between days 25 and 30 following breeding in pregnant compared with non-pregnant sows.

There are also several methods of pregnancy diagnosis in sows. Some of them include daily observation of the vulva and the behavior of the female when a boar is present, particularly at 18-22 days post-service; amplitude depth ultrasound machines; Döppler ultrasound machines; vaginal biopsy; serum analysis; and ultrasound scanners.
